Dr Maurice Smith: Clinical Director - Living Well

I’m responsible for…
I’m the Clinical Director for the “Living Well” strand of Healthy Liverpool focusing on prevention through increasing physical activity and supported self care. Most people aren't aware of the massive benefits to their health and wellbeing from simple things, such as regular walking.

I'm involved with the Digital Care and Innovation programme and especially interested in how technology can help assisted living. This builds on the very successful More Independent (Mi) programme in Liverpool of which I was the clinical lead of between 2013-2016.

My career began in
My GP career started in Salford in 1990 before moving to Liverpool in 1993. I’m now a GP partner at the Mather Avenue Surgery, a busy 9600 patient practice covering Garston and Allerton. I was very proud to be awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of General Practitioners in May 2015.

In my GP role I enjoy the challenge of diagnosing and treating medical conditions. This doesn't always mean curing people and a large part of my job is helping people become more confident in managing their conditions as well as dealing with end of life care. I have particular expertise in diabetes, cardiology and occupational medicine.

Outside of work I
I live in south Liverpool with my wife, we have two children who are now at University.  I'm a keen tennis player, enjoy watching Manchester United from the terraces (if time allows) and playing the guitar to relax. More recently I've started playing the ukulele and ballroom dancing.
